Audlem Baptist Church Online Service for the
29th June 2025

The Prophet Jonah

This is the second service in this series.

The storm became worse and worse until finally the captain and his men decided to throw Jonah into the water. They asked God to forgive them and then tossed him overboard. Immediately the sea became calm and the men thanked God. Meanwhile Jonah sank deeper and deeper into the water but God had prepared a big fish to find him and swallow him up. – Slide 6

Week Two:  Chapter 2

Welcome and Introduction

We are delighted to have Richard Holmes taking a four week series for our in-person services.  He will be guiding us through the book of Jonah.  We are making use of recordings of his talks for the online services.

Richard said how beneficial it would be if each week during this time we read the whole book.  It is only 96 verses and every time you read it you will notice something new that you did not see previously.

Hymn:  Holy, Holy, Holy

This was Richard’s choice of hymn to prepare us for his message..

The Message:  Jonah Chapter 2

If you have a Bible to hand please open it at Jonah chapter 2.

Click here to listen to the message.  It begins with Richard reading the chapter.

Hymn:  All The Way My Saviour Leads Me

This was Richard’s choice of hymn to follow the message.  For a change I have chosen a video with piano and beautiful pictures.  There are words on screen but no singing.  I hope you enjoy it.

Our Own Prayers

As you listened to the message today was there a moment when you sensed the Holy Spirit speaking directly to you?  Then tell Jesus about it.  Or maybe you simply had a ‘lightbulb’ moment which you would like to thank God for.

Spend a few moments to thank God for all his goodness to you in the last week.

Spend a few minutes in confession.

Take a few minutes to pray for others who you feel burdened for.  If you have received the Church Email, it will give you some suggestions.

Now spend a few moments praying for the fellowship of the church to which we belong and its witness to friends, family, neighbours, the young and the old, and to the wider world.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge that we, like Jonah, have often strayed from your path and experienced the consequences of our disobedience.

We are humbled by your willingness to hear our cries, even from the depths of our despair, as you delivered Jonah from the belly of the fish.

We praise you for your power to save and for your unwavering love that pursues us even when we run from you.

Lord, we pray that you would instil in us a heart of gratitude and a desire to obey your will.

Help us to remember that salvation is found in you alone and that you are the source of all hope and deliverance.

May we never forget your faithfulness and may we always turn to you in times of trouble.

We also pray for guidance in our lives, that we may walk in your ways and fulfil the purpose you have for us.

May we be instruments of your love and grace to those around us, sharing the good news of your salvation.

We offer this prayer in Jesus' name,

Amen.
